In Troodos you will find many famous mountain resorts, Byzantine monasteries & churches on mountain peaks, & nestling in its valleys are picturesque mountain villages clinging to terraced hill slopes. The area has been known since ancient times for its copper mines, & in the Byzantine period it became a great center of Byzantine art, as churches & monasteries were built in the mountains, away from the threatened coastline. Today there are 9 churches & monasteries within walking distance of each other you can visit.
